Switching from Metcard to myki

Currently, you can use myki on metropolitan trains. myki money or myki pass are valid for travel on all metropolitan train services including V/Line services in Zone 1 + 2 to Melton and Sunbury.

Passengers connecting to or from a tram or bus service should continue travelling with a Metcard.

The Metcard and myki ticketing systems will operate in parallel for a period of time. You will have ample opportunity to use up any remaining travel days, or if they have an annual ticket, swap it for a myki, before the Metcard system is turned off.

There will be an extensive public information campaign about when Metcard will end and how to exchange your Metcard for a myki, however you are encouraged to use any Metcards you may have during the transition period.

The table below illustrates the various Metcards customers have been using, and what is the most suitable myki option.

myki money or short term tickets

myki money will provide greater savings than a short term ticket. For example: a 2 hour Zone 1 full fare using myki money is $2.94, while a 2 hour Zone 1 full fare short term ticket is $3.70 (the same price as a 2 hour Zone 1 Metcard). That's a saving of 76 cents by travelling with myki money.
